Electricians: what they are licensed for, and how to check

Three different credentials share the word "electrician", and the one attached to your permit is usually not the one people ask about. Start here, then go to the job you actually have.

The short answer

A journeyman electrician is an individual licensed to perform electrical work, typically under the authority of a master or a contractor. A master electrician is a higher individual credential, usually requiring documented years at journeyman level. An electrical contractor is a business credential — the licence that lets a firm offer electrical work to the public, contract for it and pull the permit, and the one normally tied to bonding and insurance requirements. For work you are paying for, the contractor licence is usually the one that matters, because it is the one attached to the permit. Where you check varies more than most people expect. In our review of the licensing authority in all 51 US jurisdictions, 14 of them issue the individual credential locally rather than at state level, or issue none at state level at all — so an empty state-register result can mean the electrician is licensed by a city. The three credentials, and which one is on your permit

The practical question to ask is not "are you licensed" but "which licence are you working under on this job, and what is the number". Then check it on the issuing board’s own register.

In 14 of 51 jurisdictions, a blank state-register result proves nothing

The standard advice — look the electrician up on the state licensing board — assumes every state runs a register of individual electricians. Many do not, and a homeowner who takes an empty result as a red flag can reject a perfectly well-licensed electrician.

HyreElectrical reviewed the official licensing authority for all 50 states and the District of Columbia and recorded what each one actually issues and where it can be searched (retrieved 5 September 2026). From that review: 6 jurisdictions issue no statewide individual electrician licence at all — Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania — where cities, counties or home-rule municipalities license instead. A further 8 jurisdictions — Alaska, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee — license electrical contractors at state level while individual electrician cards are issued locally on top. That is 14 of 51 jurisdictions in which the credential you are trying to verify may not be held by the state at all.

This is a HyreElectrical calculation over our own board review, and the method is worth stating. The classification is a judgement about what each authority issues, held as an explicit list in the page source rather than inferred from wording, so it can be audited and corrected. Missouri is counted in the first group deliberately: it does operate an Office of Statewide Electrical Contractors, but that is a contractor licence and explicitly not a statewide journeyman or master credential. The count describes licensing structures, not licence quality, and it is a snapshot — legislatures change this, and our Kansas entry carries a correction recording a 2026 bill that died rather than passed.

The practical routine, then, is two questions rather than one. Ask which jurisdiction issued the credential, then check it with that jurisdiction. HyreElectrical’s licence lookup routes to the official board for every state and DC — and only to official boards, never to an aggregator or a directory reselling the same record. Where the state holds nothing, the tool says so rather than returning a misleading blank.

What to establish before you hire anyone

Three quotes written against three different scopes cannot be compared on price, which is the single most common reason homeowners pick badly. The detail on writing one comparable scope is in hiring an electrician.

We do not perform, supervise, inspect or warrant electrical work. We do not dispatch electricians, hold no emergency line, and issue no certificates. There is no "top electricians" list on this site and there will not be one, because we hold no basis for it that would survive scrutiny.

What we do hold is a contractor store of 16,369 electrical companies across 5 verified states — Florida 12,114, Utah 1,489, Nevada 1,066, California 903, Texas 839 — counted on 5 September 2026. 74% of it is Florida, and we disclose that first rather than in a footnote. It is a research sample for five states: not a national census of electricians, not a ranking, not an availability list, and not a recommendation of any firm in it. It is a different dataset from the 51-jurisdiction board review used earlier on this page, which is national in scope and is the only one of the two we make national statements from.

Questions

What is the difference between a journeyman and a master electrician?

Both are individual credentials for a person. A journeyman is licensed to perform electrical work, generally under the authority of a master or a contractor. A master electrician holds a higher credential, typically requiring documented years at journeyman level plus a further examination, and in many jurisdictions is the individual whose licence a contracting business operates under.

Do I need an electrician or an electrical contractor?

For work you are paying a business to do, you generally need an electrical contractor, because that is the business credential permitting a firm to contract for electrical work and pull the permit, and it is normally the one tied to bonding and insurance. The individual doing the work will hold a journeyman or master credential. Ask which licence covers your job and who pulls the permit.

Why can’t I find my electrician on the state licensing board?

Possibly because your state does not hold that record. In our review of all 50 states and DC, six issue no statewide individual electrician licence at all — Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, New York and Pennsylvania — and eight more license contractors at state level while individual cards are issued locally. So a blank state result may simply mean the credential is municipal. Ask which jurisdiction issued it, then check with that jurisdiction.

Does a licence mean an electrician is any good?

No. A licence establishes that somebody met a jurisdiction’s minimum requirements and remains in good standing. It is a floor, not a recommendation, and it is not a judgement about workmanship, reliability or suitability for your particular job. It is necessary and it is not sufficient.

How this desk works

Primary sources only. Code statements come from NFPA 70 as the model code. Safety statements come from CPSC. Permit fees come from the city or county fee sheet. Utility charges come from the filed tariff. We do not cite a blog that cites a source; we open the source.
Our contractor store is five states, and 74% of it is Florida. Any figure built on that store is titled to those states and names the concentration in the first screen. It is not a national sample of electricians.
Load calculations on this site are a published simplification in the shape of NEC 220.82 — first 10 kVA at 100%, remainder at 40%, HVAC at 100%, EVSE at 125%. They are labelled as not a stamped calculation. A licensed electrician using the adopted edition does that work.
No national price for a panel upgrade is shipped. Labour rates, the adopted code edition, whether the utility is involved, and the state of the existing wiring move the invoice too far for a roundup to help. Cost intent lives on the cost page; this page explains the decision.
