How this calculator works
There is no arithmetic that outputs "safe." Each of four prompts can add a stop reason. If any stop is present, the verdict is a hard stop: de-energise what you can from a known-good switch or the main, and call a licensed electrician. Do not keep resetting. If no stop is ticked, the verdict is still "not a clean bill of health." The engine is tested for both sentences.

The tool will never render "you are probably fine." That is the point of it. A web form cannot see a loose lug, aluminium branch wiring, or water in a box, and it will not pretend it can.
What each input means

A burning smell at one outlet
Smell yes, spark no, warm no, trip no. Verdict starts with Stop. Why names the burning smell. The instruction is to de-energise what you can and call a licensed electrician, not to keep using the other outlets on the same circuit until they smell too. This is the case the engine is tested to halt on.
A breaker that will not stay on
Smell no, spark no, warm no, trip repeat. Still a stop. The missing smell does not cancel the breaker. Resetting it "one more time" is how a fault becomes a fire. Unplug what you can from known devices if that is safe, leave the breaker off, and get help. Do not open the panel to swap the breaker yourself from a video.
The one where "no symptoms" misleads
All four ticked no. The naive reading is "we are fine." The actual sentence from the engine is that this is not a clean bill of health. Flicker when the HVAC starts, a panel with no spare spaces, a double-tapped breaker you can see on a photo of the dead front, or aluminium branch wiring from the late 1960s can all sit behind a quiet, cool, odourless week. What changes the result
Any single yes (or a "repeat" trip) is enough. Two yeses do not make a "worse" numeric score. This is not a severity index. It is a stop list.
Changing trip from "no" to "repeat" is the one people hesitate on, because the lights came back last time. Last time is not a measurement. A breaker that trips under ordinary load is a stop on this form whether or not you can smell it.
Nothing on the form asks about flicker, age of the house, or panel brand. Those are real questions and they are deliberately not stop conditions here, because folding them in would either invent a diagnosis or water down the stops. They still belong with an electrician. They do not belong in a sentence that starts "you are probably fine."
Local considerations
What counts as licensed work, who you call after hours, and which edition of the NEC your inspector uses are local. The four stop symptoms are not. Heat, smoke, arcing and a breaker that will not hold are the same hazard in any jurisdiction. This page will not publish a 50-state table of emergency numbers. If someone is hurt, call emergency services. For the electrical stop, call a local licensed electrician from a number you look up.
When not to use this
Do not use this as a diagnosis, a reason to keep resetting a breaker, or a reason to open a panel. It cannot see the bus, the wiring type, or a fault that has not announced itself yet.
Do not use it in place of 911. Smoke in the house, a person in contact with a live part, or carbon monoxide symptoms around a generator or a fuel appliance are emergency services, then fresh air, then the electrician.
Do not use an "all no" result as a clean bill for a buyer, an insurer, or a landlord. Absence of a burning smell is not an inspection.

- When should I stop using a circuit?
- Immediately if you smell burning or scorched plastic near an outlet, switch or the panel; if you see sparking, arcing or scorch marks; if a cover, device or breaker is hot to the touch; or if a breaker will not stay reset. Those are the four stop conditions on this form. They are not troubleshooting items. They are a reason to keep the circuit off and call a licensed electrician.
- The breaker keeps tripping. Can I keep resetting it?
- No. A breaker that trips under ordinary load, or that will not stay reset, is doing a job or failing at one. Repeatedly resetting it is how overheated conductors become a fire. This tool treats that as a stop, the same as a burning smell. Unplug loads if you can do it from a safe, known device, then leave the breaker off and get help.
- I do not smell anything. Am I fine?
- No. That is the sentence this engine is tested not to say. Flicker, an occasional trip, a panel that looks old, aluminium branch wiring, or a double-tapped breaker can all exist without a burning smell. The "all no" result on this page is "not a clean bill of health," on purpose.
- Should I open the panel to look?
- Not if you cannot do it dead, and not from this page either way. HyreElectrical does not open panels and will not walk you through removing a dead front. If you can see scorch or rust on the cover, that is already a reason to call someone. If you cannot see anything, that is not a reason to take the cover off yourself.
- What does a burning smell at an outlet mean?
- Something is overheating: a loose connection, a failing device, or a load the circuit cannot carry. Stop using that outlet, switch the circuit off at the breaker if you can identify it without guessing, and call a licensed electrician. Do not keep using it because the smell went away.
- Is warmth on a switch plate normal?
- No. A slight warmth that you can feel on a faceplate, a cord, or a breaker is a stop condition on this form. Electricity in good condition does not announce itself as heat on the cover.
- What if I see sparks when I plug something in?
- A small spark at the moment of connection can happen on some loads. Visible arcing, repeated sparking, or scorch on the receptacle is not that. Tick sparking yes. Stop using the device. This page will not talk you through replacing a receptacle live.
- Does this replace an inspection?
- No. It is a symptom checklist. It cannot see aluminium wiring, an ungrounded circuit, a double-tap, a recalled panel type, or water in a box. An electrician looking at the installation is the inspection. This site is not.
- Will you send an electrician?
- Not from this page. Matching is still being built, and this is not a dispatch line or an emergency service. If anyone is hurt, or you suspect carbon monoxide from a generator or an appliance, call emergency services. - A GFCI in the bathroom tripped. Is that the same as a breaker that will not hold?
- Not always. A GFCI that trips from a hair-dryer in a steamy bath is often doing its job; press reset once, and if it holds, you have a wet-location story rather than a stop on this form. A GFCI that will not reset, or a branch breaker that trips under ordinary load, is a stop. Do not keep cycling either one. This form treats only the branch-breaker "repeat" case as a trip stop, which is not a claim that a stubborn GFCI is healthy.
